Axelle Cannet

Axelle Cannet is an artist who lives and works in the Montreuil neighborhood of Paris, France.  Cannet paints figurative fantasies using either acrylic or oil on canvas.  The artist’s work ranges in scale providing a series of different experiences.

Chaos (2011) and Chaos Nocturne (2012) each consist of two panels, between 8- and 9-feet long.  These far-reaching pieces portray a wilderness of moss-covered rocks and trees.  Inspired by the Facebook Universe the artist portrays thumbnail representations of men, women and characters seen throughout this web of social media. Some look like cartoons embedded within a larger fairy tale since these depictions appear as small details throughout both paintings.

Lionne Girl (2011) is a comparatively smaller piece made with acrylic and ink on paper, portraying an avatar of the artist, who attempts to scale the side of a rock.  Another piece titled Le Chasseur (2011) shows a hunter extending his rifle from the wall of camouflaged surfaces. Axelle Cannet paints without hesitating to bring one into these alternative, dreamy environments.

In 2007 Cannet completed her studies at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris.  Her first solo show occurred in 2009 at Galerie Premier Regard titled Le manègerie.  In 2012 the artist’s work was the subject of another solo show titled Au commencement était le Vert hosted by the Orangerie de Cachan. Since 2010, Axelle Cannet’s art has been included in several group shows. Cannet won the prize at the Biennale de Cachan in 2010.
